MPC-0920
MPC-0920 is an investigational small molecule being developed by
Myriad Pharmaceuticals as an orally available, direct thrombin
inhibitor.
About MPC-0920
MPC-0920 is being developed as a potential treatment for indications such as deep
vein thrombosis and prevention of thromboembolic stroke in the
setting of chronic atrial fibrillation. MPC-0920 is designed to
address the clinical needs for rapid and predictable anticoagulant
action, an improved therapeutic window, predictable patient
response and increased efficacy.

About Thrombosis
Thrombosis, the formation of a clot within a blood vessel, is
the one of the most common causes of death in the Western World. Approximately
two million individuals in the United States die each year from an
arterial or venous thrombosis or its consequences. In addition,
thrombosis results in significant morbidity particularly in the
elderly. The most common form of thrombosis is deep-vein thrombosis
(DVT) in the leg. This type of clot can break apart, travel up the
leg and through the heart, lodging in the lungs and causing
blockage of an artery. Known as pulmonary embolism, this condition
causes lung tissue death and is an often-fatal complication of
DVT.
Thrombin is a central mediator of the coagulation cascade, is
required for the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, and is a
potent activator of platelets. Current anticoagulants, such as
warfarin, have narrow therapeutic margins, considerable drug and
food interactions, and require regular monitoring to ensure safe
and effective treatment. There exists a significant clinical need
for oral antithrombotic drugs that improve on the limitations of
current therapy.

Clinical Trial
MPC-0920 is a new chemical entity with direct antithrombin
activity. This first in human study will characterize the safety,
tolerability and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of
this compound in a single ascending dose study in healthy
volunteers.
